How they came to be Below Ground: Searching for his long-lost brother and just wound up there

Background Story:
Before the virus, Malcolm lived in Sydney Australia with his girlfriend. He was an outgoing, confident type who was decent in a fight if someone needed him.
When people started getting ill, Mal didn't find it surprising that he fell sick as well. While the virus ravaged his body, had sometimes collapse to the floor in bouts of seizures, images and feelings flooding him that he'd never felt or seen before, images of hunts and of flying, the insatiable urge to stalk and to kill prey. A few weeks later, he found that he could morph into most forms of animals, an art which he has not yet refined...
When most of the people around him perished, Malcolm used his new found hunting skills to keep himself alive for long enough. Every day, he thought about Angus, his brother and his lover. He wondered if he were alive or not, or if he'd become some hideous creature like his girlfriend had... One day, he decided that he could wonder no longer and he embarked on an epic journey across the earth, crossing land, air and sea for months before he arrived in Scotland. After a few days of searching he herd word of many survivors migrating to the remains of London. Mal figured his best bet was that Angus was there and he set off once again.
